#RealHumanRealEstate: The May Edition
|
Dear clients + community,
It's so easy to let moments of excitement and periods of reflection pass quickly in the shuffle and shift of daily activities – this month, fuller than most with both highlights and headaches, I've felt the tension of keeping gratitude alive in the daily grind (doubly so in a downpour!). Even my newsletter was harder to write, a chore that kept changing places with other, more urgent tasks. But I've always intended #RealHumanRealEstate to be a space of connection and celebration, and so here we are, in the suddenly beautiful middle of May, and I'm learning, as always, to practice what I preach. Thanks to those who've trusted me with your journeys – this month's highlights are all yours.

April closed out with two of my buyers entering contract on opposite ends of Upper Manhattan: a luminous ground floor co-op in Inwood and a Central Park-side Harlem condo being built from scratch as we speak (see rendering above). I'm thrilled for both E and B, and blessed by the luck of being their agent – E because I rented an apartment to his dear friend, and B because of a kismet meeting at my favorite local restaurant. Community: there's no better way!

This month's friend and neighbor stretches the definition to cover two continents, three languages, and a whole world of imagination. An international publishing house based in Paris (my first city), Madeleine Editions presents beautiful, immersive story experiences in English, Mandarin, and French. Each story is an original collaboration between artists from all over the world: award-winning writers, world-renowned musicians, illustrious illustrators, and, in a small supporting role, your agent! Through another kismet connection, and with the approval of a panel of French and English five-year olds, I voice several of the English-language editions, including "The Princess Who Loved Rose", illustrated above. I know many of you share the love of story with the young ones in your life: profitez-en!

Ten Tips for a Healthy Landlord-Tenant Relationship @ Harlem Properties Did you know that NYC landlords have no legal obligation to provide A/C, but do have to to provide a door with a peep hole or mirrors in the elevators? Join the Harlem Properties Team for a deep-dive into what landlords are (& aren’t) legally required to provided their tenants, and how renters and owners alike can make the most of one of your key relationships.

Open House NY + Rizzoli Bookstoreteam up to host Lily Bernheimer, whose new book The Shaping of Us explores how the everyday spaces we inhabit – from our homes and workspaces to the city’s streets — mediate community, creativity, and our very identity. I've been wildly gesticulating about the human impress of built spaces since I was a teen, so – no surprise– I've pre-ordered the hard copy and am jazzed for the conversation.

Home renovations are both famously aspirational (see: all of HGTV) and infamously dispiriting (see: dizzying arguments triggered by shower tiles), but they are above all, and especially in New York City, complex. Co-op approvals, unexpected costs, permitting. Sweeten is one of my favorite referrals, simply because they simplify, so I was thrilled to see this in-depth article that draws on their cohort of qualified contractors for some better ballpark numbers. I especially like that they approach the problem from different angles: baseline costs, what you'll get by budget at each spending tier, and solid advice about where to spend for maximum pleasure and impact. Give it a read if you're considering a reno – and if you've recently completed one, pay your progress forward! Stories and standout vendors are always welcome with me.
