Some cribs let you lower the barrier but raise it after you've lifted baby out of the crib, which is ideal for parents who are afflicted by a fear of their little one rolling off the end of their mattress.

The Luah was awarded the Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot or Moses Basket in 2021, is designed to clip on to divans and bedsteads, but requires longer straps (check your specifications to be sure that your bed can be accommodated). Georgina found it straightforward to put together, though she was not convinced that the zips could have been more clearly explained on the instruction manual.

Easy to clean

Look for cribs that come with removable mattress covers that can be washed with the machine when you are looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. This will allow you to keep it free of leaky nappies, infant sick and spills. It's also a good idea to choose a product that is easily disassembled and dismantled in parts, so that you can access all the corners and crevices to conduct a thorough cleaning and sanitising session.

This is crucial, as it will ensure that all germs and dirt have been eliminated. You'll also want to check that the sides of the crib are securely secured, ensuring that there aren't any gaps or spaces that your child could slide down or become trapped.

You'll also want to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and that it's a good fit with your bed. This is especially crucial if you're using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. These cribs are designed to be connected securely to the parent's side, giving parents to have easy access to their baby at night to feed and comfort their baby while still ensuring the safety that separate sleeping areas provide.

Another aspect to consider when selecting a crib for your bed is if it comes with additional features that you may consider useful. Some cribs tilt or rock, which is great for babies who are fussy.

It is also important to ensure that your cot or crib is a flat and firm mattress that fits snugly in the frame. This will decrease the chance of SIDS by making sure that your baby's head and feet do not slide into gaps or folds in the bedding.

It's a good idea to purchase a new mattress for the crib or travel cot rather than relying on one that was used previously or purchased second-hand. Mattresses that have been used are more susceptible to losing their shape with time, increasing the risk for SIDS. All new cribs should meet BS EN 1130:2019, the most recent standard that introduces more stringent requirements for safe and effective sleep solutions.

Multi-faceted

A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib as they're often referred to) is attached to your bed to allow you to easily reach your baby at night without having to leave your sleeping space. Some cribs can also be converted into a travel cot or include additional features such as tilting, rocking (use with caution, remember to speak to your GP regarding this) or changing into an older baby cot or playpen.

The SnuzPod 4 crib is popular for a variety of reasons, not just because of its sleek, modern design. It's also easy to clean, with a machine-washable mattress cover and breathable fabrics. It also comes with a few extras compared to other cribs. These include an anti-reflux angle as well as a rocking feature and storage space.

Jasmin says that this crib is great because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night to provide a relaxed feeding, and it's larger than other Moses Baskets so it will last for a longer period of time before my son gets older". She also likes the ease of clean and is sturdy and well-made. It can be placed on a divan, which makes it a great option for those with limited space.
