The Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) site is the best place to start. It will let you know whether a crib that is portable has ever been recall. You'll also want to choose the correct size for your baby's bed to ensure it doesn't slide into the gaps between the crib sides or create a suffocation hazard.

When choosing the right bassinet or crib choose one that meets the newer safety standards that were revised in 2022. Avoid older cribs and cribs designed for travel or cribs with drop-sides. These cribs have not been tested, and could cause danger to your baby's safety.

A travel crib should be well-built and sturdy. Examine for loose, missing or broken screws as well as other hardware. If you're using a playard, it must have mesh windows and secure walls to allow air flow. The crib slats should not be more than 2 3/8 inches apart to avoid the baby's head and limbs becoming trapped. Never put cotsfortots , blankets, or toys in the crib. These objects can choke or strangle your baby. They should be removed from the crib at the time your child is able push up on their hands and knees or before five months of age or 5 months, whichever is first.

Examine often for broken or loose screws and hardware. This is especially important when traveling with a child. Remove all plastic from the crib too.

If you're using a portable crib, make sure it is not located directly under windows. A window could be a fall hazard and your baby could be injured when they fall into it. It's recommended to keep your baby's bedroom away from windows, even if they are old enough to roll over. It is important to wake your baby when they begin to roll over while sleeping.

Portability

Portable cribs (or playards which is what they're sometimes referred to as) are a great choice for those who are who is on vacation, has a family members over, or simply needing a safe crib to use at a sleepover with friends. These portable cribs are simple to assemble, compact when they're closed, and come with a comfortable padded mattress that can support newborns up to 15kg.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib is a favorite among MFM home testers, who love the fact that it can be folded and stored in a few minutes and that its easy-to-use drop-down panels are easy for even bleary-eyed parents to use. It's not the lightest pack-and-play on our list, but it's a good weight at just a little over 15 pounds. It comes with standard handles instead of a backpack-style strap which some prefer to carry around.

The Joie Kubbie Sleep is another excellent alternative. It includes a bassinet for the bed and a crib into one compact unit. This is ideal for holidays and overnight stays with friends and family. It's not the cheapest however it comes with many all-singing and all-dancing features such as a storage basket and soothing night lights that change colour and white noise. It is better to buy a bassinet or crib designed for travel rather than using one you already own. These are smaller, have mesh sides to allow parents to check on their babies without disturbing them and are lightweight enough for easy transport between destinations. They also meet the safety standards of American Academy of Pediatrics and have not been recalled.

If you have to utilize a crib for your bed it is recommended that your child be placed on their back and the mattress be free of pillows, blankets, and toys. Sharing the bed with parents isn't advised for any baby, regardless of age, and this type of sleeping with a partner is associated with an increased risk of SIDS. If you must occasionally co-sleep ensure that your baby is sleeping and that you and your partner are fully dressed and awake.

The bedside cribs available for newborns and young babies include:

Some are designed to resemble miniature cribs or Moses basket, whereas others have sides that can be lowered down into the parent's bed. This allows parents to access their infant at any time during the night to soothe and feed their child, and avoid the dangers of sleeping with their child. The AAP warns against this due to the risk of suffocation. Examples include the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet, a bedside sleeper that attaches to the sides of a mattress for a parent. This is a great option for older children, as the sides can be elevated so that you can reach the baby without having to lift them out of bed. Another option is a travel cot that has a built-in bassinet that can be removed from the top of the crib making it easier to raise a sleeping infant for feeding or other care.

Sleeping

Bedside cribs are a great way to safely co-sleep with your newborn. They are placed near your bed at night so that you can reach over easily for night feeds and monitor them without disrupting their sleep. Some cribs have a drop-side that can be lowered to make it easier for you to do this, while others have a height adjustment so they will fit in your bed at home or away.

It was previously recommended that infants be in their own room. However parents are increasingly choosing to co-sleep. Also known as rooming-in, this arrangement allows babies to be close to their parents, but remain in a safe space on their own bassinet or crib. There are several types of co-sleeper available, including the iCrib which is designed to be portable and can be placed on top of your bed or a standard crib. This model comes with a lightweight frame, a mattress that is removable and is foldable up for easy storage. The Joie Roomie Go crib is another option. It is attached to the bed edge and comes with seven height positions, as well as a tummy tilt to help with colic and reflux. Our MFM home testers loved this crib for its compact folding and easy to use. It's also available in a variety of colors.

There are also freestanding bedside cribs such as our Lilly or Alain that you can put on top of a standard bed frame. The cribs come with the side barrier that slides down to allow you to pick up your baby for feedings at night. However the cribs are completely self-contained, allowing your baby to rest comfortably. These cribs are in compliance with the new BS EN1130:2019 safety standards which require a 120mm gap between your mattress and child's crib.

Additionally, there are travel cribs that are specifically designed to be used on the road. They tend to be smaller and more compact than standard cribs, which makes it easier to transport them in and out hotels and cars. Munchkin Brica, for example can be put together in less than one minute and folded down in three pounds. It is therefore simple to lift and transport.
