3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeler is perfect for off-roading, offering a smooth ride for your child. They are also more convenient to maneuver and push than a four-wheel buggy particularly those with fabric slings or modular seats that are set snugly in the frame, delivering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheel buggy has excellent stability, which is the reason it's an ideal choice for off road walking (especially with an all-terrain or off-road style seat unit). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheel in the front to give you extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It is important to remember that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels, which can mean that they can tip over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs have been made with the best design to ensure they stay steady in any weather. They should be able turn at a whim and be able to be controlled with one hand. They also have an incline of 360o for the front wheel that makes them perfect to navigate difficult terrain.

For extremely difficult surfaces, look out for a model with air-filled tyres, also known as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to work on non-paved tracks and are able to deal with rocks, mud, and more. Many all-terrain buggies feature a swivelling front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when dealing with extremely rough terrain too.

A three-wheeled stroller is a great choice for runners and those who love to speed up the hill. This is especially true if you plan to connect to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent model. It has an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with 5-point harness and plenty of storage space to keep everything you need (plus a 50+ extendable sun hood). It's lightweight compact and safe for use starting at birth. It can be used in conjunction with a car seat or carrycot. It can also handle a bit of light jogging but isn't intended for serious joggers.

Weight

If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle difficult terrain then you want one with big wheels. These will cope well over grass, cobbles, and dirt tracks and provide a smooth ride for anyone. These are also great for jogging, as they have a suspension built-in and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they can be quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy you can use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheeler is highly maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels as well as the front wheel can be locked. It has air tyres, which do need occasional pumping and can hold a child up to the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler liked the shape of the seat and found it easy to steer with her three-year-old child on the seat.

Another option that is great is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, which has an adjustable handlebar and a high-quality hood with 50+ UV protection. It's also simple to get up and down kerbs, and it can fit in small car boots. It can also be used as a stroller with an infant carrycot or toddlers.

Fabric sling seats are tucked within the buggie's frame, as opposed to over it like modular seats. This design provides a lower center of gravity at the perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you should never underestimate the amount of times you'll have to do that as new parents!)

Seating

The seating capacity of 3 wheelers is impressive and there are a variety of different choices to choose from. For newborns, there is the option to use the included carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can use the parent-facing or world-facing seat that is large and padded and does have adjustable ventilation. It is important to note that the seats do not recline completely, but they can be adjusted to the lowest level which should still give your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A fabric sling is also available. It has the advantage that it is located inside the frame instead of on top as a seat that is modular. This results in a lower centre of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, particularly over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this style of seat dealt with obstacles.

In addition to a large shopping basket, this kind of buggy usually has very useful features like an extended 50+ UV hood, a simple brake pedal and some bright, game-changing lights that pop up from the handlebars and can be placed in front of the occupants to ensure their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

Alternatively, if you are searching for a single baby buggy that will expand with your family, there's the brand-new sport(tm) which is a world's first that can take a single newborn from day dot and then adapt to take 2 or even three once your children have developed and all within the footprint of a single buggy.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame is more stable and can be pushed with one hand. It's also better for terrains that are difficult to navigate. The shopping basket is smaller than a four-wheeler.

A high-quality ATP will feature pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for better comfort, and an excellent suspension. It should be able to accept a carrycot or car seat, which means you can use it from birth.

MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3-wheeler frame doesn't fit through all the doors of their homes or small car boot - be sure to check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded before buying in case you're concerned about space.

Choose a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best choice for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the most popular; it can be used as a single seat from day dot and then converts into twin buggies once your baby starts walking.

Tyres

Air filled tyres have been designed to give your child an easier ride by cushioning bumps and uneven surfaces. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted’s Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres make it easy to tackle cobbles and kerbs.

They can be difficult to maintain and will require having their air pressure topped up regularly. They are also more vulnerable to punctures than foam tyres so it is essential that you have a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump on hand when you are you're out and about in your buggy.

PU tyres can be used on pushchairs because they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres but are just as robust. You can tell PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide across flat and tidy surfaces.

It's usually possible to identify the difference between air-filled and PU tire by running your fingers over each one, if it feels firm, then it's made of rubber, If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also test whether your buggy comes with PU tyres by sliding them across an even, smooth surface. They should roll easily and fit snugly into the wheel hubs.

Foam tyres can withstand the rough terrain associated with high-performance buggies. The downside of this is that the foam can expand and cause your buggy to feel less stable, since it loses its springy nature. 3 wheeler pushchair 'll also find that these tyres may typically be noisy because they make lots of noise when you turn and make your way around the town.
