Types of Deadlocks for Doors

Hook bolt deadlocks are used on aluminum sliding narrow stile storefront doors to increase security and strength of locks. The locks come with keys on both sides to allow for greater flexibility.

To accurately measure the new lock, first determine the door's case depth (or backset). This is the distance between the edge of the front door and the center of the latch hole.

van hook deadlocks is the most sought-after door latch. It is easy to install and a favorite of DIY enthusiasts and joiners alike. It's also available in a broad assortment of sizes, shapes and quality levels to suit any style of door handle.

A tubular latch is a rectangular steel casing fitted with a latch bolt and a spring-loaded latch follower (also known as a striker). When you open the door the latch retracts, allowing you to lock and shut the door. When you close the door, the latch bolt springs back and grasps the edge of the frame to hold the door shut.

You'll need to determine the maximum height of the door's latch before installing it. A lot of people think that one metre from the floor is the correct height to position a latch and door handle. However, this isn't necessarily the case. When door knobs are involved, the latch should be located in the middle of the rail - this is where the bulk of the weight is placed when you open and close the door.

Once you've decided where the latch should be, mark the position of the hole on the door and on the strike plate using a pencil. Then drill pilot holes for the screws that are used to attach the plate to the door. After drilling the pilot holes, use a countersink to make sure that the plate's back will be flush with the door after it's been screwed into place.

Consider a double-sprung lock If you require a more robust alternative to the tubular lock. The door will close much more smoothly when you choose this latch, as it has an additional spring that moves the tongue. It also has a heavy-action spring-loaded spindle tracker that ensures that levers and doorknobs are returned to their horizontal position after every use.

After you have put the latch on the door, you will require an strike plate inside the frame. The strike plate is a piece of metal that can be fitted into the space left behind by the latch after it has been closed. To do this, mark where you want the strike plate rest on the frame that surrounds it. Cut with your knife a square for the plate and then take it off.

Cylindrical Latch

Cylindrical locks are commonly employed on doors for interior use. They are used in offices and homes, and can be found in a wide range of applications. Cylindrical locks operate similar to mortise lock systems but are much easier and faster to install. They do not require that an "mortise" or pocket be cut into the door's frame like mortise locks. The hole or bore is cut into the frame of the door and they are then inserted into the door. These locks come in different sizes and can be used with both knobs and levers to open and shut the door.

The main difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that only a particular key can unlock these types of locks. The pins are held in place by springs and pins of different heights. When the correct key is used, the pins align with one another, and the cylinder is able to rotate. This allows the latch bolts to retract and allow the door to be opened.

When the wrong key is inserted, pins are not aligned correctly, which stops the cylinder from moving. This is why it's important to use the correct key whenever you want to access your business or home.

The cylinder is a part of the door's body and is connected to the operating trim using an extension of a half-round or square. There are also small notches carved out of the cylinder's side that are a match to key notches, and they are designed to line up when the appropriate key is put in. When the cylinder moves it will also move the latch bolt with it.

A strike plate is a metal plate that is affixed to the door frame and catches the latch bolt that is projected from the lock. The strike plate is typically constructed from heavy-gauge steel and fastened to the door frame with screws. It also has a strike opening which the latch bolt of the lock is inserted.

Make use of the appropriate tools to remove the knob or handle of the old lock as well as the latch bolt. Note the location of the new strike and latch bolt on the door and frame after removing the old hardware. It's a good idea check the operation of your lock by pressing the latch bolt or strike plate by using your finger. If the strike plate or latch bolt is damaged or does not work properly, you should consider replacing them.

Key-Locked Lock

This kind of lock is controlled with a key on the outside and a knob or lever on the inside. This type of lock is designed for doors that are not at risk of being interfered with, such as in offices. This kind of lock permits the outside lever to either be locked or unlocked, while the inside knob/lever is open for immediate exit. The key is needed only to retract the latchbolt after the door has been shut.

The pins of a keylock are aligned and point at a point called the shearline. When the key that is correct slides into the lock, these pins are aligned with shear line, and the plug can be turned to release the latchbolt. If you've had a key that was perfectly fitted into a lock, but cannot open, it could be because one of the pins aren't aligned with the shear line.

Some locks also come with faces plates, which is mounted on the door's edge. It can be decorative and provide protection and security to the locking mechanism. It's common to find these plates on mortice locks as well rim locks that have reversed spring bolts.

There is also a strike plate which is usually attached to the door frame and jamb and has a hole that guides the bolt from the cylinder to the lock. It is typically utilized in conjunction with deadbolts for added security.

There is also the cylinder, which is pins that align with the key's point to prevent it from turning. It is difficult to select an appropriate cylinder without the right tools and understanding. To lock a door, the key must be turned in the same direction as the door is opened. For instance, if a door opens with the right hand, the key must be turned clockwise to secure it. To unlock, turn the key counterclockwise. This is different than other locks, such as Chubb locks which require you to turn your key in the opposite way of the way the door opens.

Keyless Latch

With a keyless latch you can lock and unlock your doors without the use of a traditional key. These locks can be operated through a smartphone application or an access code. Some models come with a hidden security camera. Consider your security needs as well as compatibility with existing hardware and doors when you select a keyless lock. Some keyless locks require special door preparations or alterations therefore, make sure to check the manufacturer's specifications and installation instructions prior to installing.

Several companies are developing smart locks that replace traditional keyed locks and include additional security features. They are more durable and can be unlocked by a code, fingerprint or facial recognition. Some smart locks feature security features that prevent tampering and can detect if a door is opened using a key that is not authorized or force.

One company, called Latch has come up with an elegant high-tech lock that functions like other smart locks. Its primary market is real estate companies that manage apartments. The tenants can open the lock with a passcode, a key or mobile device. They can also let in dog walkers, cleaners or guests from outside of town using temporary codes. The company claims this will stop tenants losing their keys and reduce maintenance costs since there's no need to replace locks when the tenant moves out.

The Latch lock may not be available to consumers just yet however it may find a place in condos or large apartments. It's being tested in a handful of locations, and the company plans to roll out additional units later in the year. The cost is similar to a standard lock. The company also offers low costs for software and competitive pricing.

The Latch App can be used to determine which doors are displayed as shortcuts, and you can change this at anytime. To do this, open the app and select the menu in the top left-hand corner of the screen. Select 'Widgets', and then select the doors you want to appear as shortcuts. You can see the history of access to your doors in the Latch App once you have configured them.
