Adult ADHD Medication

If environmental modifications are not enough to aid you in your success in school or at work you could benefit from medication. These medications can be either long-acting or short-acting and include the methylphenidate (such as Ritalin) as well as amphetamine salts.

In the UK the UK, stimulants are the most frequently prescribed ADHD medication. If you don't have any other condition that requires a different medication, stimulants are often prescribed first.

Stimulants

Stimulants increase the activity in parts of the brain that control the behaviour and attention. They help improve concentration, to concentrate the mind and reduce impulsive behaviour. They can be prescribed legally as ADHD medication. However, they are commonly used recreationally as illegal substances such as methamphetamine and cocaine to boost energy levels and feelings of well-being.

You might be familiar with the brand name Ritalin which is the most frequently used stimulant to treat ADHD. It stimulates the brain areas that control attention and behaviour, which helps improve concentration and decreases hyperactive and impulsive behaviour. It is available in the form of tablets that release immediately which are taken 2 or 3 times a day, or modified-release capsules which release the medicine over the course of the day.

Lisdexamfetamine stimulates specific areas of the brain, which enhances concentration and helps focus the mind. It also reduces impulsive behavior. If methylphenidate fails to work, it is usually prescribed to teens, adults and children older than five years old. Lisdexamfetamine tablets are usually taken in two or three doses daily. Atomoxetine works differently to the other medicines that are listed above and is available to teenagers, adults and children (aged 5and over) who are unable to use the methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine due to adverse effects or other causes. It is a selective Noradrenaline-Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI). It increases the amount of noradrenaline which transmits brain signals and improves concentration and impulse control. It is taken in the form of a tablet or oral solution daily.

A large number of randomized controlled studies and observational studies have examined the benefits and harms of drug treatment for adult adhd. These studies have compared different drugs to placebos and other medications, but not all included head-tohead trials. This study combines results from these trials using a method called network meta-analysis. It is the most comprehensive analysis for ADHD and strengthens the evidence behind NICE's guidelines for prescribing medications for adults suffering from ADHD.

The results show that a substantial proportion of people suffering from ADHD can benefit from medication. But it is important to carefully weigh up the risks and benefits of taking the medication. Patients should talk to a physician about this and, if needed decide to treat the symptoms of the condition with other methods, including therapy and lifestyle changes. It is important to identify medical conditions like sleep apnea or narcolepsy which can trigger or worsen ADHD symptoms. A thorough history and examination are essential to determine possible causes for the symptoms. Patients who have a history of severe alcohol or drug abuse should be treated with extreme caution. They may need referral to a specialist service. Patients who have had a history of developmental disorders or other serious mental health problems must be assessed more thoroughly and recommended for specific tests and evaluations as required. This can include a detailed family history as genetic factors have been identified to be a factor in ADHD.
